During opening statements, Prosecutor Clyde Lemons suggested race as motive for officers’ abuse of several Chuukese men when they were arrested and allegedly assaulted November of last year. Prosecutor Lemons said, “I guess it was, let’s catch a Micronesian night!’”, in 911 tapes the arrests were referred to as “Micro-night.”. “Maybe it was because they were Chuukese.” that officers became upset . Lemons intends to prove defendants abused their authority and tried to coverup in the alleged beating of then 17-year-old Owen Moni, who underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen on the night of the arrest. Defense Attorney Tom Fisher & other attorneys, objected to “the extraordinary injection of race into this trial.” and motioned for a mistrial objecting to the Prosecutor’s comments about race considered to be misconduct by the defense. Superior Court Judge Vernon Perez overruled objections and denied motions for a mistrial. GPD Officers Castro, Sabinay, Quenga, Duenas, Henry Flores, Juan Diaz, Raynold Alcantara, and Vincent G.
